Manning Valley Historical Society and Wingham Museum

Wingham township, situated on the beautiful Manning River, was settled in the mid-1850s. Wingham Museum is located in a historic building once used as a grocery and produce store, circa 1872. The museum overlooks Wingham Town Square (or Central Park) which is surrounded on four sides by heritage buildings. Visitors to the museum have remarked on the large and extensive collections on display and the diversity of those collections which take people back in time to different ages from the colonial period to more recent times. On display are family portraits, furniture, fashions, folk crafts, farming tools, transport, glassware and mineral collections, military and indigenous displays, entertainment, local stories and sporting memorabilia. Within the Museum is the original 19th-century police cell which housed indigenous bush-ranger, Jimmy Governor, following his capture in the Manning Valley by local farmers. There is also a large collection of books and journals on local history for sale which can be bought at the museum. Archive resources are also available. Researchers are in attendance on Tuesdays from mid-morning. Please phone before coming. Alternatively, email your inquiries and you will be contacted.

Dawson River walking track is a great hike that starts at Brimbin picnic area. Before or after your picnic lunch, take a stroll on this picturesque walking track that follows the line of Dawson River before joining up with the historic bullock route of Old Port Macquarie Road. This road is an important part of New South Wales’ colonial heritage. While walking this track, see if you can find a narrow-leaved red gum, which rarely grows this far north. If you’re very lucky, you may even see a koala, as this gum provides important food and habitat to this animal. You’ll also pass grey myrtle, swamp oak, water gum and two types of mangrove: grey and river. Take along binoculars and see if you can spot birds as well as nests in the mangroves. Brimbin Nature Reserve

Brimbin Nature Reserve is just a stone's throw from Taree and a tranquil place of mangrove-lined waterways for canoeing, short trails for walking and shady areas for picnicking. Yet, over the century following European settlement of this area the traditional land of the Biripi Nation the place had a surprisingly dynamic history. Along with being the site of significant stock routes, bullock roads and river crossings, it was also part of a property owned by New South Wales' only independent female colonial settler, Isabella Mary Kelly. Ms Kellys walking track and Ms Kellys Crossing were named in her honour. Tommy Owens Crossing and Creek are in memory of the 12-year-old boy who drowned here in 1850. Enjoy picnicking by the riverside, canoeing down the waterways, or walking leisurely along one of the reserve's two walking trails. Brimbin is also teeming with birdlife, so if you're keen on birdwatching, be sure to tuck your binoculars in the picnic basket.

Ms Kellys Walking Track

Isabella Mary Kelly, New South Wales’ only independent female colonial settler, was a wealthy Irish woman who sailed into Sydney Harbour in 1834 looking for a tree change. She bought up Crown Land and ran her own station. Isabella was apparently disliked by her neighbours for doing ‘men’s work’, her house burnt down in her absence and she was, for a time, unjustly imprisoned after subletting to a conman. History has painted her character in various extremes, from a gun-slinging tyrant to a brave pioneering hero. Beginning at Tommy Owens Crossing, the track passes through a dense area of swamp oak then, from Ms Kellys Crossing, follows part of Old Port Macquarie Road. From the late 1820s, this historic route allowed bullock-drawn vehicles to cross Dawson River and continue on to Port Macquarie. It’s a great trail for walking with children. See how many different birds they can spot along the way.

Manning River

The Manning River is one of several beautiful rivers born in the Barrington Tops hinterland of the Barrington Coast. As their crystal-clear waters tumble from the rugged peaks, they breathe life into the land; for this is the Barrington Coast - a place where the leaves touch the waters from the mountains to the sea. The Manning River is a double delta river system with two openings, the only one of its kind in the southern hemisphere. The main mouth of the river is at Harrington with the second opening located at Old Bar. The river rises near Mount Barrington within Barrington Tops National Park. It descends 1,500 metres over its 261 kilometre course from the high upper reaches through the Manning Valley and out to the Pacific Ocean near Taree. The lower part of the river has several channels dividing coastal land into large islands, such as Mitchells and Oxley Islands. The Manning River and its tributaries have long been havens used by visitors, holiday makers, locals, oyster farmers, anglers and transportation during the early pioneering days. There is an increasing number of public ramps, wharves, pontoons, riverside parks, commercial tourist destinations and towns and villages scattered along the river.
