All Saints Church - Henley Brook

Historical Sites and Heritage Locations

All Saints Church - Henley Brook

Discover the charm and history of All Saints Church in Henley Brook, which is the oldest church in Western Australia. Taking three years to build by one of the early pioneers of the area, Richard Edwards, the church has been hosting services since 1841. Wander around the quaint church and examine the craftsmanship of the early settlers. Walk through the cemetery and read the inscriptions on the gravestones of significant pioneers who developed the colony, including William Mackie, Frederick Irwin and John Connolly. The cemetery is also the resting place of members of pioneering Swan Valley families. The site of the church holds great significance as it was here that Captain James Stirling camped in 1827. As stated on a sign at the entrance of the church grounds "it was here the vision of a State arose in his heart and mind." All Saints is a popular attraction for visitors touring the Swan Valley wine region. After exploring the charming church, relax overlooking the banks of the Swan River, which flows behind the church. Pack a picnic lunch and enjoy the tranquil setting. All Saints Church is in Henley Brook, 30-minutes drive northeast of Perth.

Walyunga National Park

Walyunga National Park covers 1,800 hectares of the Darling Range, tucked behind the Darling Scarp covering both sides of a steep valley. Just to the east of the park in the picturesque Avon Valley. Walyunga contains one of the largest known Aboriginal campsites around Perth and was still in use by the Nyoongar people in the late 1800s. The area has been used as a meeting place for more than 6,000 years. Walyunga is an Aboriginal name, but its meaning is uncertain. Local Nyoongar people believe the Swan River was carved by the Waugal and greet the dreamtime serpent here by rubbing sand on their bodies and throwing it in the water. The Swan River is the main attraction in the park as it thunders through in winter and meanders by in the drier months. This section of the Swan is characterised by rapids followed by deep pools and in the park the visitor can experience these attributes at Syd's Rapids, Walyunga Pool and Boongarup Pool. The woodland understorey is lovely in the spring when it comes alive with wildflowers.

Midland Town Hall

Historical Sites and Heritage Locations

Midland Town Hall

The Town Hall is one of Midland's best known buildings. It is an outstanding example of the Federation Free Classical architectural style. Midland Town Hall was officially opened in 1907. However, it wasn't until after World War I that the clock was placed on top of the dome. The clock serves as a memorial to the men who lost their lives during the War. In the 1950s, the Town Hall continued to serve as the Council Chambers and Administration Centre for the Midland Junction Municipal Council until 1970. By the 1960s, the building had become quite dilapidated and after the 1968 Meckering earthquake, came under threat of demolition. Some restoration work was undertaken on the building in the 1970s and 80s, with major work commencing in 1995. The first part of the restored complex, comprising Council Chambers, meeting rooms and offices was officially opened in 1997. The second and final stage of the project was finished and opened in grand style with a Mayoral Ball in April 2000. It is regularly used for the City of Swan's citizenship ceremonies. Midland is located 30 minutes east of Perth. It is the city centre for the nearby Swan Valley wine region and historic town of Guildford.

Syd's Rapids and Aboriginal Heritage Trail

Syd's Rapids and Aboriginal Heritage Trail

Walyunga National Park lies in the Darling Range, just behind the Darling Scarp. The Swan River runs through the centre of the park, forming a string of placid pools along the valley floor in summer, and a raging torrent with long series of rapids in winter. The latter provides one of Australia's best white water canoeing courses and is part of the annual Avon Descent race each August. Walyunga contains one of the largest known Aboriginal campsites around Perth and was still in use by the Nyoongar people late last century. Archaeological evidence suggests that the area has been used by regional tribes for more than 6000 years. The 0.8km (1.6km return) Aboriginal Heritage Trail meanders along the river bank, between Walyunga Pool and Boongarup Pool, and allows people to learn about Aboriginal heritage and see the park's plants and animals through the eyes of the original inhabitants. Syd's Rapids continues another 1.75km (3.5km return) along the river from Boongarup Pool to the Rapids and returns by the same path. The park is also known for sensational wildflowers in winter and spring, abundant native animals and rugged valley scenery which can also be enjoyed on a number of other, longer loop trails

Woodbridge at Mandoon on Whadjuk Nyoongar Country

Woodbridge, with its iron lacework, parquetry, polished jarrah, tessellated tile floors and many pieces of original furniture, is a rare surviving example of a grand 19th-century home. The attractive site was originally taken up by the colony’s first Governor, Captain James Stirling. By 1831, he had built a cottage there, a retreat from Government House. The property was purchased in 1883 by Charles Harper, farmer, politician, explorer and part owner of The West Australian newspaper. He proceeded to display his position and wealth by building the current house. In 1896, Harper established Guildford Grammar School in his billiard room and 14 years later, the Anglican Church purchased the entire property - land, building and furniture - for the school. Today the house reflects its role as home to Charles and Fanny Harper, their ten children, the cook, parlourmaid and housemaid – from the kitchen and working areas to the extensive entertaining rooms. Located just 30 minutes east of Perth, Guildford is well worth a day trip to soak up the historic beauty, traditional landscapes and friendly village atmosphere.
