Ode to Joy Mural

Landmarks and Buildings

Ode to Joy Mural

Outside Tamworth's Town Hall, the original home of the Golden Guitar Awards, is the mural 'Ode to Joy' by Charlie Nivison. Nivison (Silly Pear), a Sydney based artist, grew up in nearby Walcha, the son of artist Angus Nivison. Angus Nivison was the commissioned artist who painted the previous mural on that very wall in 1983, making this rebrand a fitting next chapter for the site and the story of Tamworth. The new artwork is a bright and bold work that celebrates the legacy of Joy McKean, the first ever recipient of a Golden Guitar Award in 1973, and Tamworth's proud connection to country music. At the heart of the mural Joy is positioned alongside lyrics from her iconic song 'Lights on the Hill' which received the inaugural Golden Guitar Award in 1973 and was made famous by her husband Slim Dusty. Slim Dusty also features in the piece, alongside the historic Tamworth Town Hall, the original home of the Golden Guitar Awards, and flora and fauna that celebrate the character of the region. The mural is painted in Nivison's signature style – bold, bright and full of character, a modern representation of Tamworth's country music legacy and the people who helped build it.

Tamworth Waler Memorial

A tribute to the men of the ANZAC corps who served in the Boer, Sudan and First World wars, the Waler Light Horse memorial statue is located in Tamworth's Bicentennial Park and depicts an Australian World War I trooper saying farewell to his Waler horse in the deserts of the Middle East. Between 1861 and 1931, approximately 500,000 horses were exported from Australia to the Indian Army, the Boer War and Egypt with The Australian Light Horse as remounts. Of these horses, only one returned, a gelding Sandy belonging to Major General Sir William Bridges. The Trooper’s uniform and the military saddler on the horse are based on original WW1 equipment. Designed and sculpted by a talented artist, Tanya Bartlett of Newcastle, NSW, the bronze memorial was unveiled and dedicated on 29 October 2005 by well-known and respected, retired Army Major General WB Digger James AC, MBE, MC. The monument is a feature of ANZAC Day ceremonies and other army commemorative services.

Tamworth Powerstation Museum

In 1888, Tamworth became the first city in Australia to be lit by municipal electric street lighting. This important moment in national and local history is preserved at the Tamworth Powerstation Museum. Established in 1988, it is located on the site where the 1888 steam engines powered the street lighting system, and the 1907 Power Station / Municipal Electric Showroom building has been refurbished to display a range of unique exhibits. It is easy to overlook the important role electricity plays in everyday lives. It has led to numerous developments in technology: from street lights and industrial machinery to kitchen appliances and hair dryers. Tamworth Powerstation Museum is Australia's only dedicated electrical museum. They invite you to join in exploring the history of electrical innovation. The highlight of any visit to the museum is the two John Fowler steam-driven engines, the only two of their type operating in the world and working replicas of the 1888 Crompton Pattern No 15 Dynamos which represent the beginnings of electric street lighting in Tamworth. During the Country Music Festival and at intervals during the year, visitors can experience the excitement of the engines in operation.
