Natural Attractions

Forest Sky Pier, Orara East State Forest

Only a short drive off the Pacific Highway from Coffs Harbour, the Forest Sky Pier at Sealy Lookout / Niigi Niigi sits within a flora reserve in Orara East State Forest, part of the amazing State Forests of the Coffs Coast, on Gumbayggirr country. A 10-minute drive from Coffs Harbour up through banana plantations reaches the lookout. Here, the Forest Sky Pier offers magnificent coastal views over the city of Coffs Harbour and up and down the coastline. There are walking tracks through the rainforest, ranging from one to three hours, and picnic tables and toilets are provided. A covered picnic shelter is available for those with mobility issues, and the Forest Sky Pier is accessible (no steps) from the car park. Coach parking is also available. Whilst at the lookout, grab a coffee from Nyanggan Gapi cafe, check out Coffs Treetops (maybe even book ahead - it's a popular canopy adventure!), or walk 500 metres down the road to the beautiful Gumgali Track (which ends at Korora Lookout). Gumgali Track shares the Gumbaynggirr story of Gumgali the black goanna in sculpture, art and sound. The Forest Sky Pier carpark is open to vehicles during daylight hours. Visiting the Forest Sky Pier is free.

Gumgali Track, Orara East State Forest

Gumgali Track is located in the beautiful Orara East State Forest, also home to Sealy Lookout (Niigi Niigi) and the Forest Sky Pier. A free and self-directed Aboriginal cultural interpretive experience along Gumgali Track shares the Gumbaynggirr creation story of Gumgali, the black goanna. Visitors are greeted with a display at the head of the track, featuring the tale of Gumgali written in Gumbaynggirr and a Welcome to Country from Gumbaynggirr Elder Uncle Mark Flanders. Along the track, visitors will encounter elements of the story of Gumgali through sculpture and art. Goanna sculptures hide in trees and on the ground, timber public art provides a place for visitors to capture images or grab a seat, and a striking 30-metre mural, spray-painted by local artists Yowa and Snarl over a cluster of utility buildings, is a colourful cultural experience. Gumgali Track concludes at Korora Lookout at the soundbar, with spoken versions of the story of Gumgali delivered in English by 12-year-old Ronan Walker and in Gumbaynggirr by language teacher Clark Webb. These stories can be enjoyed from church pew-style seating at the lookout before taking in the broader coastal ocean views from the viewing platform. Gumgali Track is a relatively easy grade return walk.

Niigi Niigi - Sealy Lookout

Niigi Niigi (Sealy Lookout) in Orara East State Forest was Coffs Harbour's first eco-certified tourism attraction. Just 15 minutes north of Coffs, Niigi Niigi is home to the famous Forest Sky Pier. From 15 metres above the forest floor, the Forest Sky Pier offers visitors an amazing panoramic view from mountains to the coast. The Forest Sky Pier is complemented by an all-access undercover picnic area, picnic tables in the surrounding forest, and rainforest walking tracks. Giingan Gumbaynggirr Cultural Experience tours happen here - a great way to learn about the culture and practices of the Gumbaynggirr people. Or take an adventure with adjacent Coffs Treetops, climbing, soaring and traipsing through the canopy. Visitors should also take time to visit Gumgali Track at adjacent Korora Lookout, a First People Interpretive Walk and experience that tells the Gumbaynggirr story of Gumgali, the Black Goanna. Visitors can also listen to the story in Gumbaynggirr language at the sound bar. Access is via a sealed road for the majority of the drive. Head north from Coffs Harbour on the Pacific Highway, turn left onto Bruxner Park Road (just north of the Big Banana) then left again at the ridge top onto Scenic Drive, following the road up to the Lookout.
