Orara River - Coramba to Nana Glen

Take Coramba Road, West out of town and in minutes you are immersed in a rural landscape that is home to rivers with freshwater swimming pools interspersed by gentle rapids. The Orara River is the only western flowing river in the region and is renowned for its crystal clear freshwater. There are numerous entry points in the valley. A great introduction to the Orara River is the Hartley's Bridge to Coramba Bridge paddle. With easy access and small races, it only takes 45 minutes and winds through pristine country and farmland. There are some fabulous picnic spots along the way. A popular three hour trip starts at the third bridge on Dairyville Rd on the Urumbulum River and finishes at Watkin Rd on the Orara River. This trip should be done after some decent rain or you might find yourself dragging your kayak a fair bit. There are easy rapids up to grade 2, suitable for those that can paddle straight and turn a kayak reasonably well. You might also encounter log jams so some skill is required. Be warned that after rainfall the rapids will be more challenging and it is recommended that you go with a guide or check with local operators before setting off.

Rainforest Walk

Few rainforest walks are as lovely as this walk found in Coramba Nature Reserve. A relaxing 800 metre return walk will take you down to Orara River, following under the cool canopy of the rainforest and past majestic old-growth trees. The rainforest here is one of a few remaining stands of lowland rainforest along the Orara River and has been listed as endangered. Thankfully, a regeneration program has protected and preserved it for visitors to enjoy. This is also a wonderful place to go birdwatching, as here you’ll spot the many native birds of the area, including rose-crowned fruit doves, figbirds, noisy pittas, brown cuckoo doves and white-headed pigeons.

National Parks and Reserves

Coramba Nature Reserve

Coramba Nature Reserve was created in 1982 to preserve and protect one of the few remaining stands of subtropical lowland rainforest that lies along the Orara River. Today, visitors can walk through this remnant of native vegetation, amongst the towering old-growth trees, under a closed canopy forest that has been successfully brought back to life through a rainforest regeneration project. Walking along the river, you'll see a lot of interesting plant life, including white booyong, pepperberry, giant stinging trees and ficus species. In the wetter months, the colours of the funghi are exquisite, with their hues of vivid pink, yellow, white and orange. There's no shortage of interesting wildlife here either. You're likely to hear giant barred frogs on hot summer nights or spot yellow-bellied gliders and long-nosed potoroos any day of the year. There's also plenty to excite those interested in birdwatching, including wompoo and rose-crowned fruit doves, figbirds, noisy pittas, brown cuckoo doves and white-headed pigeons.

From 15 metres above the forest floor, the Forest Sky Pier offers visitors an amazing panoramic view from mountains to the coast. Gumgali Track, Orara East State Forest

Gumgali Track is located in the beautiful Orara East State Forest, also home to Sealy Lookout (Niigi Niigi) and the Forest Sky Pier. A free and self-directed Aboriginal cultural interpretive experience along Gumgali Track shares the Gumbaynggirr creation story of Gumgali, the black goanna. Visitors are greeted with a display at the head of the track, featuring the tale of Gumgali written in Gumbaynggirr and a Welcome to Country from Gumbaynggirr Elder Uncle Mark Flanders. Along the track, visitors will encounter elements of the story of Gumgali through sculpture and art. Goanna sculptures hide in trees and on the ground, timber public art provides a place for visitors to capture images or grab a seat, and a striking 30-metre mural, spray-painted by local artists Yowa and Snarl over a cluster of utility buildings, is a colourful cultural experience. Gumgali Track concludes at Korora Lookout at the soundbar, with spoken versions of the story of Gumgali delivered in English by 12-year-old Ronan Walker and in Gumbaynggirr by language teacher Clark Webb. These stories can be enjoyed from church pew-style seating at the lookout before taking in the broader coastal ocean views from the viewing platform. Gumgali Track is a relatively easy grade return walk.
