Wardell Bridge Mural

Tucked beneath the Wardell Bridge and best viewed from the pedestrian underpass, this vibrant painted mural reflects the energy and creativity of the Wardell youth community. Created through a series of hands-on art workshops facilitated by the Ballina District Community Services Association, young locals came together to design and paint two central themes that capture the heart of their town — a love of music (from hip hop and dancing to local bands) and the importance of the Richmond River, including its cane fields and seasonal fires. The project supported by the Northern Rivers Community Foundation, provided participants with the opportunity to learn new artistic skills, express themselves, and build friendships in a supportive environment. Today, the mural stands as a colourful celebration of youth creativity, connection, and pride in place, transforming a once-ordinary space into a living artwork that tells the story of Wardell's next generation. Developed as a community youth art initiative, the Wardell Bridge Mural highlights the power of art to connect people, inspire confidence, and bring vibrancy to shared public spaces across the Ballina Shire.

Wonderful Wardell

Bright, bold, and brimming with community spirit, Wonderful Wardell is a large-scale digital mural created by local artist Kate Stroud in collaboration with the Wardell community. Developed during the Wonderful Wardell event in June 2024 — a celebration of local pride and creativity — Kate invited residents to share what their river town means to them through a creative design workshop. The result is a joyful artwork that combines these community contributions into a single vibrant piece adorning the Wardell Bridge abutments. Drawing inspiration from vintage Australiana tea towels and featuring culturally significant local symbols, the mural captures the personality, humour, and warmth of Wardell. It's a colourful reminder of connection — to place, to people, and to the stories that make this riverside town unique. Kate Stroud is a Northern Rivers artist, signwriter, and large-scale muralist celebrated for her joyful, rebellious, and community-led artworks. Her murals and designs enliven laneways, shopfronts, and public spaces from Lismore to Perth. Passionate about creativity as a form of identity and connection, Kate's work is a vibrant celebration of local culture, resilience, and place.

How Language Was Communicated to the Water Birds

Displayed through an illuminated ceiling installation on the ceiling of the foyer of the Ballina BP Travel Centre on the Pacific Motorway, this beautiful public artwork by Marcus Ferguson tells the story of how language was communicated to the water birds of the Ballina area. In the story, Babarra, the creator spirit, instructs Jungar (the Pelican) to gather all the birds — Swan, Brolga, Duck, Stork, and many more — at a sacred place. There, Babarra gives sound to the Bundjalung language, passing it to the birds to carry to the people of the area. All waterbirds have a special meaning for the Bundjalung language as they are the carriers of the spirit message. The artwork also acknowledges Yuralba (Duck Creek) — meaning "many ducks sitting on the bank". Near this site are the nearby pathways through the valley once used by Aboriginal people for seeking Cedar. Ceremonial grounds and Bora rings used to exist here, many mobs lived on camps on either side of the creek and valley. Marcus Ferguson is a Nyangbul Goorie artist from Ballina and Cabbage Tree Island who has been painting for more than 25 years. His works celebrate cultural birds, animals, and stories from the lower Richmond River region, honouring Country and keeping traditional knowledge alive through contemporary art.

Big Prawn

Nine metres high and weighing 35 tonnes, the Big Prawn is one of Australia's most famous Big Things. It's hard to miss as you drive east along River Street, the main road into Ballina. It's also hard to imagine the town without it. However, a prawnless Ballina was almost a reality. Twenty years after its birth in 1989, the giant crustacean was looking a bit long in the pincers, and locals debated fiercely over what should be done about it, there was even talk of demolition. Thankfully, hardware store (which lives next door) came to the rescue, and following a substantial makeover, the new-and-improved Big Prawn was unveiled in 2013. For the first time, it even had a tail. Taking a picture with the prawn is a must-do if you're in Ballina. And if the sight of all that seafood makes you peckish, fear not: there are some great places selling fresh catches on the other side of the road.
