Ballina Public Art - The Rusty Plank

Galleries, Museums and Collections

The Rusty Plank

Towering proudly at the gateway to Lennox Head, the centrepiece of the Byron Bay Road and Ross Lane roundabout, The Rusty Plank is a striking 12-foot corten steel sculpture created by blacksmith Jim Blower and artist Potts. The piece stands as a bold tribute to the spirit of surfing — celebrating the camaraderie, freedom, and connection to the ocean that define the Lennox lifestyle. Weighing over 130 kilograms and forged from weathering steel, the sculpture's rugged materiality mirrors the strength and endurance of the surf culture it honours. The artists describe it as "a heavy metal attitude with a Beach Boys spirit" a fitting nod to the balance between grit and joy that surfing inspires. Jim Blower, a Byron-based blacksmith with over 40 years of experience, creates bespoke furniture, fittings, and large-scale metal artworks from his Bangalow studio. Potts (Graham 'Potts' Porter), a Mullumbimby-based fine artist, graphic designer, and sculptor, draws inspiration from surf, ocean, and coastal culture. Working across multiple mediums, his art captures the movement, texture, and rhythm of the natural environment, infusing each piece with colour and energy. Together, their collaboration combines craftsmanship and creativity, resulting in a work that's both industrial and soulful — a true reflection of the Lennox Head surf community.

Adding a splash of colour and creativity to the Lennox Head Skate Park, the Wave Mural is a vibrant acrylic artwork by NITSUA (Austin Moncrieff) and local youth, inspired by their stories and the spirit of coastal life. The mural captures a playful and heartwarming tale shared during the COVID lockdown — the story of a young local who befriended an octopus in a nearby rockpool, teaching it to "high five." Community Art Pavers

Scattered throughout Ross Park in Lennox Head, the Community Art Pavers form a joyful and collaborative artwork celebrating the heart of the community. Developed through the Lennox Arts Board's (LAB) "Make Your Mark on the Park" workshops, locals of all ages were invited to create their own paver-sized drawings inspired by the things they love most about Lennox — from its beaches and surf breaks to its wildlife, sunsets, and village charm. Each clay paver was then transformed into a permanent piece of art, embedding the voices, creativity, and identity of the Lennox community directly into the park itself. The result is a colourful, textured walkway that tells a shared story — one step at a time. Led by the LAB, this project brought together residents and artists to create an enduring artwork that celebrates community connection, local pride, and creativity in public spaces.

Migaloo

Glowing softly in the heart of Lennox Head, Migaloo is a stunning galvanised metal and LED light sculpture by local artist Kerrith Giese. The artwork serves as a luminous reminder of the annual humpback whale migration that graces the Northern Rivers coastline - and of the rare and much-loved white whale, Migaloo, who sometimes passes by these very shores. Now sighted for over 30 years, Migaloo has become a symbol of wonder and connection to the ocean. This sculpture captures that spirit - the light, movement, and awe of seeing the whales on their journey north. Inspired by Ballina's coastal landscapes, the artworks reflect the harmony between land and sea. Set on the top of hill and accessed via Ballina Heights Drive, Cumbalum, one tank evokes the movement and energy of the ocean through flowing forms and vibrant colour, while the other draws on the calm strength of the land, using earthy tones and organic textures. These captivating murals turn everyday infrastructure into public art, offering a unique visual experience that blends creativity with place.
