Snapper Rocks is a small rocky outcrop on the northern side of Point Danger at the southern end of Rainbow Bay on the Gold Coast. Snapper is a point break forming the first part of the man-made Superbank which extends from Snapper Rocks Point, through Rainbow Bay, Greenmount Point, Coolangatta Beach, and Kirra, for a distance of around two kilometres.
The Superbank is now renowned as one of the most consistent breaks in Queensland and plays host to the annual World Surf Leagues’ Quiksilver and Roxy Pros. Multiple barrel sections can now occur at any point along this length. The quality of the surf has markedly improved since the 1990s, and is now of legendary quality, creating one of the longest, hollowest and best waves in the world.
The Rainbow Bay Surf Club is the best place to view the break while enjoying a relaxed meal.
Situated on the New South Wales/Queensland border, high on a peak overlooking Duranbah Beach which is popular for surfing. Point Danger was named by Captain James Cook on his 1770 journey up the east coast of Australia to warn later mariners of dangerous coral reefs off this treacherous coast.
From an historic point of view this place is brimming with interesting facts about Australian maritime history. At Point Danger you will find the Captain Cook Memorial, moulded from cast iron actually jettisoned from the Endeavour and recovered in the 1960s. Next to it is the lighthouse which was the first to experiment (unsuccessfully) with laser light. Memorial plaques are positioned along 'Centaur Remembrance Walk' to those lost at sea.
From Point Danger, you will often see dolphins out to sea, and on a fine day there are views from Surfers Paradise to Byron Bay.
Point Danger is a scenic headland, located on the Southern end of the Gold Coast in Coolangatta and overlooks the popular Duranbah Beach. The headland is home to the Captain Cook Memorial as well as the iconic Point Danger Lighthouse. There is beachside parking, amenity blocks, barbecues, plenty of picnic tables and the headland is just a short walk away from the famous surf spot, Snapper Rocks.
"Dee-bah", as it's known locally, is the most northerly beach in New South Wales; walk a few metres up onto the headland here on a summer's day and you'll find yourself in Queensland and in a different time zone. Less than 200 metres in length, Duranbah is somewhat unheralded, particularly in comparison with Snapper Rocks around the corner, the home break of Aussie surfing world champions Mick Fanning and Joel Parkinson.
As this beach faces due east, it's exposed to swell from pretty much anywhere so on days when it's flat on both sides of the border there's often a wave here. The Tweed River break-wall at the south end shapes a nice right hander, popular with body boarders.
Tweed Heads has accommodation, restaurants, clubs and casinos aplenty, and the town is serviced by Coolangatta Regional Airport.
Gold Coast Skydive are the only Tandem Skydive operation on the gorgeous Gold Coast! Boasting an excellent safety record, state of the art equipment and a pristine beach-side location.
They have a great team full of fun and professional tandem masters who will take passengers through all the necessary training and go out of their way to make sure it's a truly amazing experience that you will never forget!
The Museum complex consists of four buildings. The Old Tweed Heads Court House is the Headquarters of the Tweed Heads Historical Society Inc, custodians of the Tweed Maritime Museum. As well as housing the historical records of the Society (which are available for research), the building contains a fine collection of historical photographs depicting the early Tweed settlements, beach and country scenes, shipping, pioneer families and commerce.
The Society was founded in 1985, and its objectives are to promote, conserve and research Tweed Valley and Lower Gold Coast history. Meetings are held once a month and are open to visitors.
With local buses every half hour it is easily accessible on Kennedy Drive.
