Leyburn Heritage Trail

Galleries, Museums and Collections

Leyburn Heritage Trail

Known as the town of living history, Leyburn will charm you with its old time feel. Patrick Leslie passed through this area in 1840, and this small village came to life as a resting point for the bullock teams that later followed in his footsteps. It was originally known as Leslie Crossing but its name was later changed to Canal Creek and finally Leyburn, after a town in Yorkshire, England. Many of its buildings and landmarks date back to mid to late 1800s and the town's historians have pinpointed them with informative commemorative plaques. To immerse yourself in all the stories Leyburn has to tell, install Southern Downs Regional Council's free official Southern Downs & Granite Belt Visitor App on your mobile device, and tap and scroll your way to the Leyburn Heritage Trail, and let the app take you on a tour of the town. This trail is 10 kilometres long and will take most people around 3 to 4 hours to complete on foot, depending on your walking speed. If that is too far for you to walk, you may prefer to jump in the car to look at some of the sites that are furthest from town, such as the Leyburn Cemetery and the Secret WW2 "Z" Special Unit Camp.

Sister Kenny Memorial

You'll learn some fascinating history on a visit to the memorial of Sister Elizabeth Kenny (born 20 September 1880, died 30 November 1952). Sister Kenny had a significant world-wide impact on the treatment of polio (Infantile Paralysis), one of the world`s most devastating diseases. Sister Kenny lived in Nobby and received world recognition for her revolutionary treatment of polio victims in the early to mid twentieth century. She challenged the then current medical practice of immobilising muscles affected by polio and proved that exercising them aided in patient recovery. This memorial chronicles her life and gives an account of the battles she had with the male-dominated medical establishment of the day. She is buried in the peaceful Nobby cemetery which overlooks the wide, rolling hills, and her life is also commemorated by a local memorial park.

Warwick Heritage Trail

As one of Queensland's earliest settlements, Warwick is home to some of the State's most interesting European history. Gazetted in 1847, Warwick's first land sales occurred in 1850. After 1900, a second building boom gave Warwick a legacy of many fine Federation-era timber and brick buildings. Travel back in time with this walk that will take you past some of Warwick's most grand heritage buildings. The best way to find and admire all of this magnificent architecture is with the official Southern Downs Visitor App. Download the official Southern Downs Visitor App and start planning your next Southern Downs adventure today. Japanese Garden

Discover the tranquility of one of Toowoomba's most peaceful and beautiful parks - the 4.5 hectare Japanese Garden at the University of Southern Queensland. Ju Raku En roughly translates as 'to enjoy peace and longevity in a public place' Jointly owned by the University of Southern Queensland and the Toowoomba Regional Council, this maturing landscape sits on the northern side of the campus and stands as Australia's largest and most traditionally designed Japanese stroll garden. Its elements of mountain stream and waterfall, Dry Garden, central lake, Azalea Hill, 3km of paths, 230 species of Japanese and Australian native trees and plants, and lawns combine in seamless and restful harmony. Japanese gardens emphasise the use of rocks to create three dimensional pictures. All of the large rocks in Ju Raku En were placed by the garden's designer, Professor Kinsaku Nakane of Kyoto, to appear naturally dispersed in a random way. Visitors wander the paths or rest beside the Dry Garden, while early mornings often bring photographers, quiet sketching artists and children feeding the fish. Swans, ducks, geese and native bird species frequent the grounds. Japanese maples blaze with autumn colour, and in spring the Wisteria Pergola drapes in lilac blooms—a favourite backdrop for weddings.

Gumbi Gumbi Gardens

Acknowledging the Giabal and Jarowair people as the traditional custodians of the land where this campus and these Gardens now stand. Paying respect to their elders – past, present and future – and acknowledge that these lands have always been places of teaching and learning. In the spirit of reconciliation, the Gumbi Gumbi Gardens have been established through a partnership between the community and the UniSQ as a place for learning and the sharing of ideas. This builds on ancient traditions and cherished stories, it continues the conversation between peoples that has brought us to this point in time and it provides a path to opportunities yet to be realised. The Gardens were designed in collaboration with Historical Elders from Toowoomba and Elders of the Jarowair people. The symbol of these Gardens - the gumbi gumbi (Pittosporum angustifolium) – was introduced to Toowoomba from further west as a multi-purpose medicine by Joyce and Walter McCarthy. It represents knowledge, growth and healing. These Gardens tell the story of the growth journey we all take; learning from the past to inform the future. It is a story of mutual dependence, of walking and growing together and of confidence in the future.
