New Farm Park

Parks and Gardens

New Farm Park

New Farm Park is one of Brisbane’s oldest, grandest and largest parks and attracts more than 18000 visitors each week from all around the world. The 37-acre park is a popular spot with local families and friends who gather on weekends to relax, picnic, barbecue, kick a ball and catch up beneath the trees or in the open fields. The city-owned park often has free live music events in the rotunda and other special events throughout the year. Prior to European settlement, New Farm was covered with bush and dotted with shallow lagoons. Following the founding of the Moreton Bay convict settlement the land initially became a farm before sub-division in 1843. The parkland had a racecourse from 1846 until 1913 when Brisbane City Council acquired the land to create a park. New Farm Park opened in 1919. One edge of the park touches the Brisbane River and a riverfront boardwalk connects the park with Brisbane Central Business District by foot, or from the CityCat ferry terminal. Next to the park is the Brisbane Powerhouse, an incredible old building re-purposed as an edgy arts centre. Catch live music, comedy, theatre and more, plus the weekend farmers' markets and moonlight cinema (seasonal).

Jan Powers Farmers Markets - Brisbane Powerhouse

The Jan Powers Farmers Markets Powerhouse has drawn strong crowds of food-lovers and smart shoppers since the arts venue opened in 2000. Much has changed over two decades but what remains consistent is a commitment to high-quality products, a deep connection with farmers and primary producers and a sense of loyalty among stallholders and shoppers. The Saturday morning markets attract thousands of visitors each week stocking up on everything from fresh fruit and vegetables to artisan cheeses and smallgoods to handmade pasta and bread. There is no shortage of quality coffee vans to kickstart your morning and an abundance of food trucks and vendors to fill your bellies with the likes of acai bowls and smoothies, loaded bagels and burgers and nourishing curries and stir-fries. You can source fresh fruit straight from the grower, speak to butchers and bakers about their unique ranges and stock your fridge and pantry with wares bought directly from farmers, chefs and artisans. Enjoy the bustling atmosphere of the busy market or take your purchases to the nearby New Farm Park for a relaxed riverfront picnic. The family-friendly markets located in the forecourt of Brisbane Powerhouse also welcome dogs.

Riverwalk Cycle

Landmarks and Buildings

The Brisbane Riverwalk

Whether you’re walking, running or cycling, the Brisbane Riverwalk is one of the best ways to move between two of the city's most vibrant precincts. Linking trendy New Farm with the city, the suspended pathway sits above the water and provides a beautiful view across the river to Kangaroo Point and a fresh angle central business district view. The original floating pathway washed away when major flooding struck Brisbane in 2011 but reopened in 2014 with a new design built to withstand a one-in-2000-year flood. The first walk, constructed in 2003, was a well-used route and the replacement thoroughfare proved just as popular. Pedestrians and cyclists coming from New Farm can access the path from Riverview Court. On the central business district side, the walkway ends at the historic Howard Smith Wharves where it connects to the riverside boardwalk, creating an uninterrupted route all the way to the Botanic Gardens. Along the Brisbane Riverwalk the cycling and pedestrian pathways are segregated for safety. An opening span of the pathway allows vessels to access the shoreline where it would otherwise be blocked by the walkway.

Story Bridge Adventure Climb

Landmarks and Buildings

Story Bridge

Brisbane's Story Bridge opened for operation on July 6, 1940. This date came five years after construction commenced and fourteen years after initial recommendations for a river crossing at Kangaroo Point. Essentially, the Story Bridge was one of the then government's three major public works projects, creating years of employment for many men during the Great Depression. The Story Bridge is the largest steel bridge designed, fabricated and constructed in Australia by Australians. Currently, the bridge is repainted every seven years using 17500 litres of paint. There is approximately 105000 square metres of painted steel surfaces. The Story Bridge Adventure Climb is one of only three bridge climbs in the world. Climbing over the steel structure gives you an incredible bird's eye view over Brisbane City, Kangaroo Point and far beyond to the distant mountain ranges and up the Brisbane River. Beneath the bridge on the Central Business District side is Howard Smith Wharves, a historic shipyard-turned-precinct. The old warehouses have been turned into a craft beer hall and conference spaces, and there are newly built bars, cafes and restaurants along with open parkland.
