Her current explorations blend natural fibres with metalwork, ceramics, botanical printing, and cyanotype, expanding the creative possibilities of her practice. Paula continues to learn weaving and basketry from both traditional and modern practitioners, whom she honours as powerful teachers and carriers of ancient art forms. She is committed to sharing her knowledge while embracing new techniques that support fresh, contemporary expressions of weaving as a vibrant and evolving art. Whale Watching on Redlands Coast

Ride upon the spirit of the humpback whale as these majestic, migratory creatures pass by Redlands Coast from June to November each year. Watch from the headland of Point Lookout (Mulumba) on North Stradbroke Island (Minjerribah) as an estimated 40,000+ whales migrate north. Be captivated as they breach and spout, sending the sparkling waters of southern Moreton Bay high into the air, glistening in the sunlight. Each time you see these magnificent mammals it is as exciting as the last. Point Lookout is regarded as one of the best land-based whale watching sites on Australia’s eastern coast. It is here that you will find the Minjerribah Panorama Coastal Walk that links from the whale-watching platforms overlooking Frenchmans Beach. This glorious new walk has several picnic areas and viewing points and includes the revamped Frenchmans Stairs that snake down to the beach. It runs south to connect with the iconic 1.2km-long Gorge Walk that twists its way around the rocky headlands. These walks offer the finest vantage points on the island to spot the whales as they pass on their annual migration. You will also have a bird’s eye view of a variety of other marine life, including sea turtles, manta rays, schools of fish and playful dolphins frolicking in the waves.

In depths from five to 15 metres, divers will see reef fish, moray eels, octopus, nudibranchs, flatheads, parrotfish, globefish, wobbegongs, stingrays and stonefish. Amity Point is best dived on the high tide, being tidal like all the sites in the bay, but it can also be done as a drift dive. Amity Point is also a great night dive popular for divers training, with an interesting array of nocturnal marine life, such as crabs, shrimps, crayfish and parrotfish.

Boat Rock Dive Site

Natural Attractions

Boat Rock Dive Site

Boat Rock is an action-packed dive site located off Brisbane’s North Stradbroke Island. While always a sensational dive, it is the least visited dive site in the area as it is generally washed by strong currents, is a tricky spot to anchor and is a site best suited to experienced divers. This tiny outcrop barely breaks the surface and its steep sides drop straight to 25 metres. If you rush your dive you can circumnavigate the base of Boat Rock on a single dive, but there is also a maze of rocky gutters and ledges to explore around this rocky pinnacle in depths to 30 metres. The coral growth at Boat Rock is very average, but you don’t dive into this site to look at corals as you are likely to see schools of trevally, kingfish, fusiliers, surgeonfish, snapper and mackerel. Also common are wobbegongs, Queensland gropers, stingrays, spotted eagle rays, turtles and even the odd bronze whaler shark.

Middle Reef Dive Site

Located halfway between two of North Stradbroke Island’s most popular dive sites, Shag Rock and Flat Rock, is a large rocky ridge known as Middle Reef. There are a number of dive sites at Middle Reef, in depths from 12 metres to 33 metres, where divers can explore ledges, caves and rocky walls. This wonderful rocky reef is coloured by pretty soft corals, sponges, gorgonians, sea whips and bushy black coral trees, the coral so lush as it is nearly always washed by strong currents. Middle Reef is populated by the usual varieties of reef fish and invertebrate species found off Brisbane, but is also a good place to see gropers, crayfish, wobbegongs, stingrays and eagle rays.

Teerk Roo Ra National Park

Teerk Roo Ra National Park is a Moreton Bay island with beautiful beaches, significant cultural heritage values and natural conservation values, both terrestrial and marine. It has been jointly managed by the Quandamooka people through the Quandamooka Yoolooburrabee Aboriginal Corporation and the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service since 2011. The 519 ha island is surrounded by mangroves, except for a sand beach on the southern side that forms Horseshoe Bay. Rich in cultural significance, Teerk Roo Ra is the only intact example of a multiracial lazaret in Australia. It opened in 1907, housing leprosy patients for the next 52 years. Prior to the lazaret, the island served as a quarantine station (1874 to the 1890s) and home for 'inebriates' (1910–1916). Boating and fishing are popular activities around the island. Both Horseshoe Bay and Platypus Bay provide clean, calm waters for swimming. The shipwrecks in Platypus Bay host a variety of marine life, providing a popular place for snorkelling. Ensure you have a dive flag visible when snorkelling to warn boats of your presence; the area around the wrecks is also used for boat mooring. Horseshoe Bay and Platypus Bay are the only parts of the island open to the public. The rest of the island is a restricted access area to help preserve its historic remains.
