Crows Nest Falls

Natural Attractions

Crows Nest Falls

Just half an hour's drive from Toowoomba, Crows Nest Falls can easily be combined with a visit to nearby Ravensbourne National Park. Weeping bottlebrush, river she-oak and forest red gum line watercourses while dry vine scrubs grow in sheltered gullies where soil and moisture accumulate at the Falls, a prominent feature of Crows Nest National Park. After good rain, water tumbles through eucalypt forest along a series of boulder-strewn cascades, before plunging 20 metres over Crows Nest Falls into a waterhole surrounded by steep, granite cliffs. The Falls are a haven for native birds and provides many opportunities for birdwatchers. Wildflowers, including the rare Acacia granitica, flourish in the shallow, rocky soils and provide colourful displays in spring and summer. Explore Crows Nest Creek, the falls and the Valley of Diamonds by following walking tracks that start at the picnic ground. Lookouts provide lovely views. Seasonal wildflowers provide interest for photographers and naturalists, and spotlighting for nocturnal native animals can be rewarding. Picnic and camping areas are provided (a camping permit is required). The campground includes unpowered sites for tents and caravans. Showers, toilets, barbecues, tables, water and firewood are also provided.

The Woolshed at Jondaryan

The historic Jondaryan Woolshed in Southern Queensland Country offers visitors an immersive walk through restored colonial buildings and one of Australia's leading tributes to the wool industry and its role in shaping the Darling Downs. In 1973, Lawrie and Lyn Rutledge gifted the Woolshed to the Jondaryan community. With strong support from volunteers, locals, and businesses, the site was developed over the next three decades into a major heritage attraction. Many buildings were relocated from rural properties once linked to the original 19th‑century Jondaryan Station. The shearing shed was added to the Queensland Heritage Register in 1992, and the Museum now houses an extensive collection of wagons, tractors, and agricultural machinery. Management transferred to Jondaryan Shire Council in 2002 and later to Toowoomba Regional Council in 2008. Since then, new facilities—including a popular caravan park—have enhanced the visitor experience. Visitors can explore the grounds through a self‑guided tour on non‑event days, supported by a downloadable app that shares stories about key buildings. School groups are welcomed with hands‑on packages and damper morning tea, and several areas across the site are available for weddings and private functions.

Laurel Bank Park

Laurel Bank Park

Laurel Bank Park is a beautiful 4.5-hectare parkland close to Toowoomba's city centre. Laurel Bank Park is one of Toowoomba's most loved green spaces, with classic English-style gardens, mature trees and seasonal floral displays. Visitors can also enjoy a scented garden, playground, barbecue and picnic areas, and two croquet lawns. The park changes with the seasons, from rich autumn foliage and striking winter branches to the fresh colour and growth of spring and summer. In spring, Laurel Bank Park is filled with thousands of flowers, a purple wisteria arbour and an avenue of ornamental peach trees. Around 70,000 to 80,000 annuals and 11,000 bulbs are planted each year for the vibrant displays. In 1932, Darling Downs Building Society Managing Director Mr Samuel George Stephens donated the land to the people of Toowoomba, with the City Council appointed as its official custodian. Prior to gifting the land, Mr Stephens improved it with shrubs and flowers, and was known to many as 'the man of flowers'. He asked that flowers be supplied to Toowoomba Hospital and that the land be retained as a park and not used as a sporting facility, with the exception of the Croquet Greens along Herries Street. Laurel Bank Hall was built during World War II and used as a mess hall for United States naval troops.

Gumbi Gumbi Gardens

Acknowledging the Giabal and Jarowair people as the traditional custodians of the land where this campus and these Gardens now stand. Paying respect to their elders – past, present and future – and acknowledge that these lands have always been places of teaching and learning. In the spirit of reconciliation, the Gumbi Gumbi Gardens have been established through a partnership between the community and the UniSQ as a place for learning and the sharing of ideas. This builds on ancient traditions and cherished stories, it continues the conversation between peoples that has brought us to this point in time and it provides a path to opportunities yet to be realised. The Gardens were designed in collaboration with Historical Elders from Toowoomba and Elders of the Jarowair people. The symbol of these Gardens - the gumbi gumbi (Pittosporum angustifolium) – was introduced to Toowoomba from further west as a multi-purpose medicine by Joyce and Walter McCarthy. It represents knowledge, growth and healing. These Gardens tell the story of the growth journey we all take; learning from the past to inform the future. It is a story of mutual dependence, of walking and growing together and of confidence in the future.
