Crows Nest Falls

Natural Attractions

Crows Nest Falls

Just half an hour's drive from Toowoomba, Crows Nest Falls can easily be combined with a visit to nearby Ravensbourne National Park. Weeping bottlebrush, river she-oak and forest red gum line watercourses while dry vine scrubs grow in sheltered gullies where soil and moisture accumulate at the Falls, a prominent feature of Crows Nest National Park. After good rain, water tumbles through eucalypt forest along a series of boulder-strewn cascades, before plunging 20 metres over Crows Nest Falls into a waterhole surrounded by steep, granite cliffs. The Falls are a haven for native birds and provides many opportunities for birdwatchers. Wildflowers, including the rare Acacia granitica, flourish in the shallow, rocky soils and provide colourful displays in spring and summer. Explore Crows Nest Creek, the falls and the Valley of Diamonds by following walking tracks that start at the picnic ground. Lookouts provide lovely views. Seasonal wildflowers provide interest for photographers and naturalists, and spotlighting for nocturnal native animals can be rewarding. Picnic and camping areas are provided (a camping permit is required). The campground includes unpowered sites for tents and caravans. Showers, toilets, barbecues, tables, water and firewood are also provided.

Crows Nest National Park

Discover spectacular scenery, granite outcrops, a scenic waterfall and eucalypt forest remnants in Crows Nest National Park on the edge of the Great Dividing Range. Few places have such a wonderful variety of eucalypt trees from gums to stringybarks, bloodwoods and ironbarks, delighting the amateur naturalist. The park is a haven for wildlife including platypus, swamp wallabies, echidnas, bandicoots, lace monitors, birds, and the brush-tailed rock-wallaby, which is vulnerable to extinction in Queensland. Discover Crows Nest Falls, on the Crows Nest Falls Lookout track, where water plunges 20 metres over steep granite cliffs. Extend the original 2.1 kilometre circuit by adding the Kauyoo Loop to The Cascades, Kauyoo Pool and Bottlebrush Pool, where you're able to take a dip on a hot summer's day. Continue to adventure 4.5 kilometres to Koonin lookout for a glistening birds-eye-view over the Valley of Diamonds and spot brush-tailed rock-wallabies, rosellas and fantails. Stay overnight in the small bush camping area to watch nocturnal bandicoots and gliders at night. Book camping in advance.

The Palms National Park

Tucked away in the hills east of Cooyar, The Palms National Park is a gem worth making an effort to visit. Small in size, but big in nature, this tiny patch of rainforest is filled with impressive piccabeen palms, towering fig trees and a rich suite of birdlife. At the heart of The Palms is an impressive stand of piccabeen palms clinging to a waterlogged depression and surrounded by a variety of other vegetation types. Wildlife finds refuge in the forest where it is moist, and thrives at the junction between different forest types. The Palms is a great place for a stopover en-route to the Bunya Mountains, or when driving between Cooyar and Yarraman. Enjoy a picnic lunch and then follow the short walk that encircles the palm forest—palms one side, dry vine forest on the other. Admire piccabeen palms, a large strangler fig, bunya and hoop pines, and buttressed trees along the track and boardwalks through the rainforest. Look for grey-headed flying-foxes roosting in the palm trees above the creek in summer, or on the ground for noisy pittas and black-breasted button-quails during winter and spring.

Cumquats Australia Farm Shop & Distillery

Cumquats Australia is a farm-based visitor destination located at Cressbrook in Queensland's Brisbane Valley, near Toogoolawah and the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail. Operating from a working family farm, the property combines a beef cattle enterprise with an orchard of more than 500 cumquat trees, a commercial ginger crop, an on-site distillery and a farm gate shop. Visitors can learn about the cultivation and processing of cumquats and ginger, and discover how farm-grown produce is transformed into a range of value-added products, including preserves, liqueurs and gin. The farm provides a direct connection between agricultural production and small-batch food and beverage manufacturing. The property's gin and liqueurs are crafted using fruit grown on the farm, while future production plans include eau de vie and brandy made from fruit harvested from the orchard. This paddock-to-bottle approach enables visitors to experience the complete journey from crop production through to finished product. Several of the property's fermented alcohol products have been developed and fermented on-site in collaboration with the Queensland Alliance for Agriculture and Food Innovation (QAAFI) at The University of Queensland. This collaboration has supported the application of research-based fermentation methods and product development processes. Through farm experiences, tastings and retail sales, visitors gain insight into speciality fruit production, regional food and beverage manufacturing, and the agricultural heritage of the Brisbane Valley.
