Chinaman's Lagoon

Natural Attractions

Chinaman's Lagoon

Chinaman's Lagoon offers a spectacular showing of Australian native water lilies. The lagoon is a picturesque sight when the water lillies are in full bloom, mainly during spring. Take a break from the drive and enjoy a picnic by the water while enjoying this spectacular view. These beautiful pink water lilies are extraordinary in that they are a rare species of tropical water lily (Nymphaea gigantea var rosea) that is extinct in its natural habitat. This species only survives in a handful of locations throughout Australia, Chinaman's Lagoon being one of them. A walking track offers the adventurous a five kilometre walk along the creek from the lagoon which passes the historic Dogwood Cemetery, the first cemetery of Miles and gives access to the main street of Miles.

Condamine Bell

Don't miss a large replica of the Condamine Bell, inscribed with the history of the township in the Condamine Bell Park. Condamine is famous for the first successful bell which was made by Samuel William Jones, who had a smithy by the Condamine River from early 1866 to late 1878. It is claimed the sound could be heard from seven miles (11.2 kilometres) away. Bullock bells were a necessity in early pioneering days to find the team of bullocks who had strayed from camp after being unyoked overnight as vast areas of land were unfenced. They remain an important piece of history in the Condamine area. Grab a tasty burger and a cold drink from the roadhouse across the road to enjoy in the shade of the park's covered tables.

Wandoan Water Tower

The Wandoan Water Tank is an interesting site in the Australian Silo Art Trail. the beautiful mural painted on one of the storage tanks acknowledges the story of the early settlers, the people from the district who served in the wars and early industries. Members of the Wandoan Progress came up with the idea, ran a competition to work out what to paint on the tank and this was the finished product. The tank was painted at night with the help of an overhead projector. This was set up on the ground the image then shone on the tank. The local artists climbed onto the back of a ute and painted the outline and eventually filled it in. A great initiative by a group of proud Wandoan locals. A recent addition to the water tower has been the evening Light Show. Every night from 7.00 pm to midnight, visitors are welcome to come and gaze upon the light show projected on the grain silos beneath the Southern Cross. Relax in your camping chair or watch the show from the comfort of your vehicle. Wandoan Soldier Settlers Avenue of Honour

To celebrate Wandoan's rich history and the significant contribution of the 103 families who came to Wandoan through the Soldier Settler Scheme, the Avenue of Honour was created. Soldier Settlers was the name given to honourably discharged soldiers who were selected in a ballot between 1952 and 1954 to settle in Wandoan and given land to establish working farms. In total, 103 families settled in Wandoan after being granted blocks of land in the scheme. The Wandoan Soldier Settler Scheme of the 1950s was integral to the development of the Wandoan community, helping to shape its success as an agricultural centre and close-knit community. The 'Avenue of Honour' lines the pathway within O'Sullivan Park and features over 100 individual plaques commemorating each soldier settler family. Beautiful rose bushes add a lovely touch and colour to the Avenue. The installation also includes fabulous steel entrances at either end of the park to boost its prominence as well as some new gardens and information boards telling the story of the Soldier Settler Scheme and its history in the town.
