Explore the digital archive and experience court hearings from the past. For a century the building served as a courthouse, police administration and residence for officers and their families. Over the years, a few cell blocks were built as one would collapse and another constructed to replace it, while further out the back there is the final Tracker's Hut, built in 1948. From 1980 police families moved into the modern residence next door, and then in 1988 administration was transferred from the court room to the current police station. What makes this courthouse unique to the state is that it was built with masonry rather than timber. What makes it worthy of being on the Queensland Heritage Register is its link with the earliest establishment of pastoral settlement in the district, and Birdsville's role as a border and customs post.

One of Australia’s rarest plants, the Waddi Tree (Acacia puece), has a spiky, needle-like leaf and thick bark. The Waddi Tree piqued early explorer William John Wills’ interest, with some samples of the seeds found buried in his diary after his death. The extreme hardness of Waddi wood was put to a number of uses by the local Aboriginals and European settlers. Now a protected species you can find these trees on the fringe of the Simpson Desert in Queensland and the Northern Territory.

Historical Sites and Heritage Locations
This rest stop has public toilets and is a Telstra mobile service area. Today, it is part of Roseberth Station, and serves as a reminder of early settlement in the area. Located on the road between Bedourie and Birdsville. Nearby is the Carcoory Homestead was built in 1877 of local limestone by Hector and Norman Wilson. Listed by the National Trust, this attraction is an example of the rich history of the Diamantina Shire. After years of drought and the loss of 4,000 bullocks, Carcoory was abandoned by Sir Sydney Kidman in 1906. This site pays tribute to the significant difficulties faced by early pastoralists - even the Cattle King Sir Sydney Kidman suffered losses at the hands of the fickle outback weather. Sit among the site ruins and consider what life on the land was like then, and still can be like now.
