About this place
What to expect
Understory is a unique and immersive experience that awakens your senses, sparks your imagination, and deepens your connection to nature, place, and possibility. Set out on an unforgettable walk through an ancient forest alive with creativity. Along the 1.2 kilometre trail, you'll find sculptures tucked into trees, stories carved into landscapes, and interactive artworks waiting to be explored. Kids will love the surprises around every corner. Adults will rediscover their sense of wonder. Uncover works created by 50+ acclaimed local, national, and international artists — each one responding to the forest in surprising and imaginative ways. Sculptures, stories, music, and poetry emerge along the path, inviting you to slow down, wander, and let your imagination lead the way. Step away from the noise and into a sanctuary where art, stillness, and nature meet. Each artwork is intentionally placed to spark reflection, insight, and moments of peaceful pause — whether you're seeking clarity, grounding, or simply a mindful moment to yourself. One of WA's most distinctive attractions and a must-do for travellers discovering the Southern Forest, Understory is developed and managed by the local community, offering a truly meaningful visitor experience found nowhere else on Earth. Your journey begins at the Northcliffe Visitors Centre — home to the Community Café, Painted Tree Gallery, and Outdoor Garden Gallery.
