About this place

What to expect

Discover the maritime and holiday history of Tuross Head on the Eurobodalla South Coast, where historic boatsheds, waterfront views and a grove of Norfolk Island Pines tell the story of a village shaped by the lake. In the 1850s and 1860s, small coastal vessels carried timber and farm produce from around Tuross Lake, though its difficult entrance made it hard to develop as a port. In 1870, Patrick Mylott bought the 875-acre Tuross peninsula and built Tuross House, overlooking Coila and Tuross lakes. When he moved his family to Sydney in 1883 so his young daughter could study opera, Tuross-born Eva went on to become an internationally renowned opera singer. A plaque honours her in Eva Mylott Park on Jutland Avenue. Tuross Head became a holiday destination in the mid-1920s, when Hector McWilliam bought the property from Mylott's widow, subdivided it and sold lots for holiday houses. He planted 200 Norfolk Island Pines and established a nine-hole golf course. The pines remain his distinctive legacy. To soak it all up, stroll past the historic boatsheds on Trafalgar Road, built to serve the growing demand for fishing and boating on Tuross Lake, and enjoy a meal on the waterfront. Then wander through the Norfolk Island Pine grove in McWilliam Park at Tarandore Point.
