About this place

What to expect

Sunshine Cove Beach is a sheltered, family-friendly snorkelling spot at Sunshine Bay, near Batemans Bay on the New South Wales south coast. Two prominent headlands enclose the cove and protect it from southerly swells, keeping the water relatively calm and suiting novice and experienced snorkellers alike. Getting there: Sunshine Cove Beach is 5 km south of Batemans Bay via Beach Road, Sunshine Bay. Setting: The beach is a mix of pebbles and sand, with a picturesque, quiet feel despite its closeness to town. Underwater, snorkellers find a mix of rocky reef, sandy bottom, and seaweed beds. Marine life: Snorkellers commonly see red morwong, luderick, bream, and groper, as well as lobsters and abalone, among the reef and seaweed. Marine park rules: Sunshine Cove Beach lies within a Habitat Protection Zone of the Batemans Marine Park, so restrictions apply. Check the current zoning plan, available from most bait and tackle stores, before you go. Sunshine Cove Beach's calm, sheltered water and varied reef habitat make it a good choice for families and beginner snorkellers, while still offering plenty for more experienced snorkellers to explore.
