About this place

What to expect

The eastern side of Lady Elliot Island isn't always accessible for diving due to its exposure to weather conditions, but when conditions are right, it offers some truly spectacular dive sites. A standout feature of this section of the fringing reef is a dramatic wall that drops from 14 to 22 metres. Undercut with ledges, overhangs and caves, it's home to two of the island's most popular dive sites, Hiros Cave and The Tubes. Drift diving is particularly popular here, with both sites often explored in a single dive. As you drift along the wall, keep an eye out for turtles, reef sharks, gropers, stingrays, eagle rays and schools of reef fish. It's also worth keeping an eye on the blue, where manta rays and silvertip sharks are known to patrol. Colourful gorgonians and soft corals blanket the wall, while the caves provide shelter for crayfish, barramundi cod and coral trout. Be sure to poke your head into a few along the way, you never know what might be hiding inside.
