About this place
What to expect
Following the White Mountain Hills through remote Kimberley wilderness, Duncan Road is a 429-kilometre unsealed drive through vast cattle stations and rugged outback landscapes, with river crossings, swimming holes and secluded bush camping spots along the way. Begin near Halls Creek, where a short detour takes you to Old Halls Creek, the site of Western Australia's first gold rush and the remains of the original township. Just seven kilometres along Duncan Road is China Wall, a striking natural formation of white quartz rising from the surrounding landscape. Stop to explore, enjoy a picnic or cool off in the water when conditions allow. Further along, Caroline Pool, Palm Springs and Sawpit Gorge offer more opportunities to experience the landscape, with dramatic rock formations, freshwater pools and peaceful places to stop among the ranges. Beyond these easily reached attractions, Duncan Road becomes a true outback drive, crossing creeks and rivers as it winds through sparsely populated station country towards the eastern Kimberley. Road conditions can vary considerably and travellers should be well prepared for remote outback travel. There are no services and no mobile phone reception along the route, so carry adequate fuel, food and water, be fully self-sufficient and check current road and weather conditions before setting out. A high-clearance four-wheel drive is required, particularly following the wet season and where creek crossings are involved.
