About this place

What to expect

Carson's Lookout on Thunderbolts Way welcomes visitors to the Barrington Coast with extraordinary views at 936 metres elevation. Driving south from the New England Highway onto Thunderbolts Way takes you across the high plateaux and ridges before descending towards Gloucester. Make sure you stop at the picnic area at Carson's Lookout for unbeatable views across Giro valley and Monkeycot Nature Reserve to Barrington Tops, one of the best views in the Barrington Coast. It is a perfect spot to enjoy the view and take a well-earned break from driving. Carson's Lookout offers parking, picnic facilities and toilets. Named after Gloucester resident Eric Carson (1913-1999), a member of the team who built the first road up the mountain in 1961. The lookout commemorates the achievements of those who blazed this route up from the coastal hinterland to the New England high country. And in case you're wondering, the highest lookout in Barrington Tops is Thunderbolt's Lookout at 1436 metres. Carson's Lookout is located on the Thunderbolt's Way midway between Gloucester and Nowendoc. Looking west from the Thunderbolts Way, Carson's Lookout offers panoramic views over Giro and State forests to the Barrington Tops World Heritage area. The lookout offers parking and picnic facilities and is about 40 minutes from Gloucester.
