About this place

What to expect

Discover Australia's only national heritage-listed migrant camp. Step into the shoes of a migrant and uncover compelling stories of resilience, hope and new beginnings. Today, Block 19 is all that remains of the 24 accommodation blocks that once made-up Australia's largest and longest operating reception centre. Open to the public, explore historic buildings, immersive exhibitions and displays, inspired artwork and guided tours that connect you with this uniquely Australian story. Bonegilla Migrant Reception and Training Centre was home to more than 320,000 migrants between 1947 and 1971. For many, it was a place of uncertainty, but also of dreams, courage and starting over. Come on a journey that opens your eyes to the harsh post-war realities of migration to a faraway land often unknown. Touching the lives of millions, one in 20 Australians has a personal connection to the site. Plan your visit to a place that helped shape modern Australia and laid the foundation for the multicultural nation it is today.
