Things to Do on the Gold Coast: Beaches, Hinterland and Local Events

The Gold Coast is famous for its golden beaches and theme parks, but there is much more to discover beyond the postcard views. Spend your morning beside the ocean, explore rainforest trails in the afternoon and finish the day at a market, live show or waterfront restaurant.

Whether you are planning a family holiday, a romantic weekend or a short coastal escape, here are some of the best things to do on the Gold Coast.

Explore the Gold Coast’s beaches

With a long stretch of coastline to explore, beach time is an essential part of any Gold Coast trip.

Surfers Paradise is the region’s best-known beach and a convenient place to begin. Its central location puts you close to restaurants, shops and entertainment. Visit early for a peaceful walk along the sand or stay later to see the beachfront come alive.

For a more relaxed atmosphere, head south to Burleigh Heads. Swim at the patrolled beach, walk around the headland and enjoy views across the coastline. Nearby Tallebudgera Creek is popular with families thanks to its calmer water and sandy shoreline.

Other beaches worth visiting include:

  • Broadbeach for dining, shopping and easy beach access
  • Currumbin for swimming and views of Elephant Rock
  • Coolangatta for a quieter seaside atmosphere
  • Kirra for its long beach and famous surf break
  • Palm Beach for relaxed cafés and coastal walks

Always swim between the red and yellow flags and follow local surf-safety advice.

Walk through Burleigh Head National Park

Burleigh Head National Park combines coastal scenery, rainforest and ocean views in one compact area. Its walking tracks climb through the headland between Burleigh Heads and Tallebudgera Creek.

The Oceanview Track follows the lower side of the headland, while the Rainforest Circuit climbs higher through native vegetation. Lookouts along the way provide excellent places to watch surfers, spot marine life or photograph the coastline.

Complete the walk in the morning before stopping for breakfast or lunch in Burleigh Heads.

Discover the Gold Coast hinterland

Drive inland and the Gold Coast’s high-rise skyline quickly gives way to mountains, waterfalls and subtropical rainforest.

Springbrook National Park is known for its dramatic lookouts, forest walks and waterfalls. Natural Bridge is one of its most recognisable attractions, where water flows through a naturally formed rock arch into the cave below.

Lamington National Park offers longer walks through ancient rainforest, with trails ranging from short scenic strolls to challenging day hikes. Tamborine Mountain is another popular hinterland destination, with rainforest walks, galleries, cafés and locally made food.

Conditions can change after heavy rain, so check park alerts and walking-track information before setting out.

Spend a day at the theme parks

The Gold Coast is Australia’s theme park capital, making it an easy choice for families and thrill-seekers.

Warner Bros. Movie World combines roller-coasters, family rides and entertainment inspired by well-known characters. Dreamworld offers thrill rides, children’s attractions and wildlife experiences, while Sea World brings together marine exhibits, presentations and amusement rides.

Wet’n’Wild is a popular warm-weather option, with waterslides, pools and family play areas. Allow a full day for each major park and compare ticket options before visiting if you plan to see more than one.

Visit Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary

Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary is an opportunity to meet Australian wildlife while learning about conservation and animal care.

The sanctuary is home to koalas, kangaroos, reptiles, birds and other native animals. Wildlife presentations and keeper talks help visitors understand the animals and the challenges affecting their habitats.

Allow several hours to explore comfortably. Families may want to check the day’s presentation schedule before arriving.

Enjoy the Broadwater

The Broadwater offers a calmer alternative to the open surf beaches. Its waterfront parks are ideal for picnics, walking and family outings.

Broadwater Parklands has grassy areas, playgrounds, swimming facilities and paths overlooking the water. From the surrounding area, visitors can also join cruises, kayaking trips and other water-based activities.

It is a particularly good option when you want a slower day between theme parks or longer sightseeing trips.

Experience the Gold Coast’s food scene

The Gold Coast has developed a diverse food scene stretching from beachfront dining rooms to neighbourhood cafés and lively markets.

Broadbeach and Surfers Paradise offer plenty of central choices, while Burleigh Heads, Palm Beach and Nobby Beach are known for fashionable restaurants and casual eateries. Head inland to find hinterland cafés, wineries and restaurants surrounded by greenery.

Look for local seafood, seasonal produce and venues with outdoor seating. If you are visiting on a weekend, check whether a farmers’ market, street-food event or pop-up dining experience is happening nearby.

Explore HOTA and the local arts scene

Home of the Arts, commonly known as HOTA, is the Gold Coast’s major cultural precinct. It hosts exhibitions, theatre, music, comedy, film and community events throughout the year.

The surrounding parklands and lake make it worth visiting even when you are not attending a performance. Exhibition programs and event times vary, so see what is scheduled during your stay.

You can also discover smaller galleries, live-music venues and creative events throughout the region.

Browse the local markets

Markets are an easy way to experience the Gold Coast beyond its major attractions. Depending on the day and location, you may find fresh produce, handmade goods, vintage clothing, street food and live entertainment.

Some markets are held in the morning, while others operate at night. Because schedules can change, confirm the location and opening time before travelling.

Watch the sunrise or sunset

The Gold Coast’s east-facing beaches are ideal for sunrise. Burleigh Heads, Currumbin and Kirra all offer beautiful early-morning views, especially when the ocean is calm.

For sunset, visit a hinterland lookout, walk beside the Broadwater or find an elevated restaurant overlooking the city. The view from the mountains towards the coast is particularly impressive as the skyline begins to light up.

Find events happening on the Gold Coast

Local events can turn a good Gold Coast holiday into a memorable one. The region hosts live music, markets, exhibitions, sporting events, festivals, workshops and family activities throughout the year.

Before finalising your itinerary, search Find What’s On to discover events happening on the Gold Coast during your visit. You may find a neighbourhood market, live performance or community celebration that you would otherwise miss.

A three-day Gold Coast itinerary

Day one: Beaches and Burleigh Heads

Begin with a morning swim at a patrolled beach before exploring Burleigh Head National Park. Stop for lunch in Burleigh Heads, spend the afternoon beside Tallebudgera Creek and finish with dinner near the coast.

Day two: Hinterland adventure

Drive to Springbrook National Park or Lamington National Park for rainforest walks and scenic lookouts. Alternatively, spend the day exploring Tamborine Mountain’s walking tracks, shops and cafés.

Day three: Attractions and entertainment

Choose a theme park, visit Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary or explore the Broadwater. In the evening, attend a local event, performance or market.

Planning your Gold Coast trip

The Gold Coast is spread across numerous coastal and hinterland communities, so grouping nearby activities will reduce travel time. A car is useful for reaching the national parks and mountain villages, while public transport connects many coastal areas and major attractions.

Pack sun protection, comfortable walking shoes and a reusable water bottle. If you plan to visit during school holidays or a major event, book accommodation and popular attractions early.

With beaches, rainforests, family attractions, great food and a busy calendar of local events, the Gold Coast offers far more than a single style of holiday. Build your itinerary around a few must-see places, then leave enough time to discover something unexpected.
