What to expect
Big Things celebrates Queensland's larger-than-life roadside icons and the stories that have made them part of our cultural landscape.
Standing proudly beside the road, in country towns and on the edges of cities, these oversized everyday objects have become symbols of community pride, regional identity and unforgettable family road trips.
Home to more big things than any other Australian state, Queensland has embraced this uniquely playful roadside tradition like nowhere else. This immersive summer exhibition at State Library invites you on a journey around the state to explore the history, characters and communities behind 12 of Queensland's iconic Big Things.
Discover the surprising stories behind Queensland's most recognisable roadside attractions through photographs, film, objects, architectural plans and personal stories. Meet the larrikins, dreamers and local legends who imagined, built and saved them for future generations.
Equal parts nostalgic, humorous and unexpected, Big Things offers a fresh perspective on why these iconic landmarks continue to capture our imagination and remain enduring symbols of the communities they represent.
