Local search visibility dropped? Check this first

Separate a reporting fluctuation from a real customer-discovery problem before changing everything.

A ranking report can move while calls and bookings remain steady. The reverse can also happen. Before editing profiles or publishing new pages, confirm whether customers are actually finding the business less often.

Confirm the size of the problem

  • Compare qualified calls, directions, forms and bookings with the previous comparable period.
  • Check more than one location, device or reporting source.
  • Note holidays, closures, weather, stock or capacity changes.
  • Separate branded searches from broader local discovery.

Check for a clear operational cause

Open the website and booking path on a phone. Check for profile suspension notices, changed categories, incorrect hours, duplicate locations, expired events and edits made by staff or platforms. Compare public details with the canonical business record.

Review recent website changes

Look for pages removed or redirected, accidental noindex rules, broken forms, changed location copy and slower mobile delivery. If several changes launched together, list them with dates rather than guessing which one caused the decline.

Change one verified issue at a time

Repair the highest-confidence problem, record what changed and allow a sensible observation window. Rapidly changing names, categories, addresses and page copy makes the result harder to interpret and can create new inconsistencies.

Escalate with evidence

If a material decline continues, prepare a short record of dates, affected locations, customer outcomes, profile status and technical checks before seeking specialist help. No checklist can guarantee rankings; the useful outcome is a clearer diagnosis and fewer risky edits.

Keep monitoring the customer measures that matter while the investigation continues. A recovery in one keyword tool is encouraging, but it should not close the review if suitable calls, directions or bookings are still below the normal range.
